Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced his resignation on 25 July 2026 after weeks of nationwide student protests triggered by alleged NEET‑UG paper leaks. The movement was organised by the viral Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which rallied tens of thousands at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and staged a 26‑day hunger strike led by activist Sonam Wangchuk. Protesters demanded accountability for the exam scandal, a one‑crore‑rupee compensation for families of students who died by suicide, withdrawal of FIRs against demonstrators, and an apology for police use of force.

The government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accepted three of the demands – Pradhan’s resignation, the compensation pledge and the FIR withdrawals – and announced the appointment of senior BJP MP Pralhad Joshi as caretaker minister with additional charge of the Education portfolio. Modi also ordered a high‑powered task‑force on examination reform, headed by technocrat Nandan Nilekani, to overhaul the national testing system. Political leaders, including PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, praised the outcome as a “victory of Gandhian politics,” while the CJP warned that the movement’s broader reforms were far from finished.
