Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down on July 25, 2026 following weeks of nationwide student demonstrations triggered by a leak of the NEET‑UG exam paper that affected about two million candidates. The leak led to the cancellation of the May 3 test, a re‑test in June, and linked suicides of several aspirants, sparking a hunger strike and mass protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The movement, organized by the social‑media‑driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), demanded Pradhan's removal, compensation for families of the deceased, withdrawal of FIRs against protesters, and broader education reforms.

After multiple rounds of talks, the government accepted the CJP’s five‑point charter, promised compensation, and announced the withdrawal of legal cases. Pradhan submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing the need to protect the youth and prevent “anti‑national forces” from exploiting the unrest. Opposition leaders—including Rahul Gandhi, Naveen Patnaik, and Mehbooba Mufti—congratulated the protesters, describing the resignation as a victory for democracy and a defeat of the Modi government’s intransigence. The CJP subsequently announced the end of its agitation, citing the agreed‑upon concessions.
