India's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme lifts child sex ratio, minister says

Union Minister Savitrī Thākur told the Lok Sabha that the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) programme is helping improve the child sex ratio across the country. Citing the Health Management Information System, she said the national sex ratio at birth rose from 918 in 2014‑15 to an estimated 929 for 2025‑26. In the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the ratio improved from 901 to 915 over the same period.

She also highlighted that the gross enrolment ratio of girls in secondary schools increased from 75.51% in 2014‑15 to 83.4% nationally, and from 99.13% to 108.3% in Delhi, indicating higher participation. The scheme, expanded to all districts under the Mission Shakti "Sambal" vertical during the 15th Finance Commission period, engages government agencies, media, civil society and the public to change attitudes toward girls.
