India's CISF seizes 1,800 metric tons of coal in anti‑theft operation

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) reported that, over a three‑week drive, it confiscated 1,798.7 metric tons of coal that had been illegally mined, stored or transported, an amount valued at roughly ₹1.08 crore. The operation also resulted in the seizure of 84 vehicles—including heavy‑duty Hyva trucks and specially‑modified motorcycles—used to move the stolen coal, and 21 direct complaints were filed against the perpetrators.

The campaign was launched after a high‑level review meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 5 July 2026, which set the target of “zero coal leakage.” CISF officials cited statutory powers under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, especially Sections 22, 23B and 24, to file complaints, conduct searches and act against illegal mining sites. Intelligence, CCTV surveillance and real‑time monitoring of coal movements were key tools in identifying vulnerable locations and disrupting smuggling networks. Seized vehicles have been handed over to local police for legal action, and the force pledged to continue intelligence‑led, technology‑enabled enforcement in coordination with coal companies and local authorities.
