India's Congress says government yields to student protests, introduces exam bill

All India Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said the central government has surrendered to nationwide student protests over alleged irregularities in competitive exams such as NEET and CBSE. He asserted that the protests forced the government to present the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha during the monsoon session (July 20 – August 13). The bill proposes fast‑track courts, harsher penalties and other measures aimed at preventing paper leaks in future exams.

Venugopal emphasised Congress’s support for the youth, reiterated demands voiced by party leader Rahul Gandhi—including the resignation of the minister responsible for the exam system, who has stepped down—and called for answers to parliament regarding police actions against students.
