India's defence production reaches record 1.78 lakh crore rupees amid security upgrades
India's defence ministry reported that domestic defence production rose to a record 1.78 lakh crore rupees in fiscal year 2025‑26, a 15.6% increase over the previous year and roughly 110% growth over the past five years. Private sector participation surged, contributing about 42,000 crore rupees, the highest ever, while government firms remain the major producers.
The surge in production coincides with a broader push to strengthen the country's security infrastructure. Initiatives include extensive border fencing, expansion of high‑altitude strategic road networks with over 4,595 km built since 2020‑21, and intensified anti‑insurgency operations such as Operation Sindoor 2025 and the PRAHAAR counter‑terrorism strategy. Defence exports also hit a new high of 38,424 crore rupees, reflecting increased global acceptance of Indian‑made equipment.
