India's DMK opposes delimitation-linked women's reservation bill
DMK leaders warned that the government may introduce a delimitation bill tied to a 33% reservation for women in the Lok Saabha and state assemblies. Party spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan said the Lok Saabha seats of southern states must not be affected, adding, "We want the southern states not to be affected." Rajya Sabha floor leader Tiruchi Siva backed a reservation based on the present strength of the Lower House, saying any delimitation that harms southern representation should be delayed for 25 years. The opposition parties lack the two‑thirds majority needed to amend the Constitution, and the DMK pledged to oppose any proposal that reduces southern states' parliamentary voice.
The party also raised related concerns about the Mekedatu project and a proposed Higher Education Commission Bill, but its primary focus remains blocking a delimitation exercise that could undermine southern representation while linking it to women’s reservation.
