India's DMK pushes for Parliament debate on controversial Mekedatu dam project

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has tabled adjournment notices in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, calling for an immediate parliamentary debate on the proposed Mekedatu dam on the Cauvery River in Karnataka. DMK leaders T.R. Balus in the lower house and Tiruchi Siva in the upper house argued that the project threatens Tamil Nadu's water security and the livelihoods of millions of farmers who depend on Cauvery waters.

The party urged the central government to suspend other business and treat the issue as a matter of urgent public importance, emphasizing the need to uphold the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal's decisions and Supreme Court directives. The monsoon session of Parliament is set to begin on July 20.
