Mekedatu water dispute escalates, political backlash

Entities: C. Joseph Vijay · G. K. Vasan · C Joseph Vijay · T. K. S. Elangovan · K. Annamalai

Overview

The Mekedatu balancing reservoir controversy continues to dominate inter‑state and national politics. After farmer protests and on‑ground construction in early July, Tamil Nadu’s DMK‑led government pressed for legal remedies while Karnataka advanced work on the gorge site. In the Monsoon Session, Congress MP Manish Tewari and DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva moved motions to force debate on the project and to set up a specialised tribunal.

On 25 July the two chief ministers agreed to meet on 3 August to discuss implementation of the Supreme Court’s Kaveri water order and the pending Mekedatu work. The agriculture ministry warned that separate talks without Cauvery Water Management Authority approval would be illegal. Former chief minister M. K. Stalin urged Karnataka’s C. Joseph Vijay to avoid compromising Tamil Nadu’s legal fight.

On 30 July Vijay’s planned trip to Karnataka sparked a fresh political backlash. Karnataka’s D. K. Shivakumar acknowledged the visit but postponed compliance with the CWMA order to release 3,500 cusecs daily, citing low rainfall. Tamil Nadu opposition leaders – PMK’s Anbumani Ramadoss, VCK’s Thol Thirumavalavan and others – condemned the trip, highlighted that the state had received only about 3.6 TMC of water at Biligundlu between 1 June and 27 July against its 36.4 TMC entitlement, and called for an all‑party meeting and field agitation. The episode underscores rising tension between the states over water allocation and the Mekedatu dam, with both sides preparing diplomatic and legislative responses.
