India's Durgashtami Festival Observed on July 21, 2026

The monthly Hindu observance of Durgashtami falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the bright half of the lunar month. In July 2026 the festival will be celebrated on Tuesday, 21 July, according to the Hindu calendar.

Rituals recommended for the day include purifying the worship space with Ganga water, placing a red cloth on a wooden platform, installing an image or picture of Goddess Durga, and offering rice, vermilion, red flowers, fruit and sweets. Devotees are advised to light incense, a lamp, and chant mantras such as “ॐ दुं दुर्गायै नमः” and recite the Durga Chalisa or Durga Saptashati. The auspicious timing for the puja spans the Brahma Muhurat (approximately 04:00–06:00 a.m.) and the Abhijit Muhurat (approximately 11:47 a.m.–12:35 p.m.).

Believers hold that sincere worship on Durgashtami removes personal hardships, brings courage and success, and promotes family peace and prosperity.
