Arvind Kejriwal to march on Aug 4 demanding pure‑petrol option over E20 fuel
Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal announced on 1 August that he will lead a march to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on 4 August with a hundred volunteers to hand over a petition signed by more than 200,000 citizens. At a national town‑hall against the E20 ethanol‑blended petrol programme, Kejriwal laid out three demands: (1) petrol pumps must offer both pure petrol and E20, (2) E20 should be priced lower than pure petrol, and (3) the price of petrol should stay below ₹84 per litre.
Activist Tehseen Poonawalla, who has been leading protests against the policy, claimed that Delhi Police placed him under house arrest ahead of a planned hunger strike, posting videos of officers outside his home and stating that no official paperwork was provided.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas defended the E20 programme, saying the blend shielded Delhi consumers from a sharp price rise during the Iran‑related crude‑price spike. Without ethanol blending, petrol could have reached about ₹125 per litre; with the 20 % ethanol mix, consumers paid roughly ₹94.77 per litre, saving around ₹30 per litre. The ministry added that the programme has generated foreign‑exchange savings of over ₹1.97 lakh crore, substituted more than 316 lakh metric tonnes of crude imports and cut CO₂ emissions by over 950 lakh metric tonnes. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari warned that E20 may reduce vehicle mileage by 2‑6 % depending on vehicle type. A survey cited by the protestors reported that 67 % of respondents experienced lower mileage and 45 % reported engine problems.
