Arvind Kejriwal leads march to PM's residence over India's E20 ethanol-blended petrol policy
Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal announced a march on 4 August to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, taking with him about 100 supporters and petitions signed by more than 200,000 citizens. He demanded (1) a choice between pure petrol and E20 at fuel pumps, (2) that E20 be priced lower than pure petrol, and (3) that the retail price of petrol stay below ₹84 per litre.
Activist Tehseen Poonawalla claimed Delhi Police placed him under house arrest ahead of a planned silent protest and hunger strike against the E20 policy, posting videos of police outside his home and saying no official paperwork was provided.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas defended the programme, stating that without the 20 % ethanol blend petrol prices in Delhi would have risen to about ₹125 per litre during the global crude‑price spike, whereas consumers paid roughly ₹94.77 per litre, saving around ₹30 per litre. The ministry added that ethanol blending has generated foreign‑exchange savings of over ₹1.97 lakh crore, substituted more than 316 lakh metric tonnes of crude imports and cut CO₂ emissions by over 950 lakh metric tonnes. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari told Parliament that E20 may reduce fuel economy by 2‑6 % depending on vehicle type, while the petroleum ministry had earlier quoted a 3‑5 % mileage impact. The government also rejected claims that the programme is a taxpayer subsidy, calling it “India’s energy insurance”.
