E20 Janta Party Demands 100% Pure Petrol Option and Gadkari’s Resignation
A newly formed digital movement called the E20 Janta Party has launched a campaign against India’s mandatory ethanol‑blended fuel policy. The group, which amassed more than 25,000 followers on X within hours and over 100,000 on Instagram, demands that every fuel station offer an option to purchase 100 % pure petrol alongside the government‑mandated E20 blend (20 % ethanol, 80 % petrol). It also calls for the resignation of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, blaming the policy for reduced mileage, possible engine wear and higher running costs for owners of older vehicles.
The movement cites concerns over a 3‑5 % mileage drop in older cars, acknowledges consumer reports of larger losses, and urges transparent labelling, public data on fuel economics, and independent studies on mileage, emissions and engine durability. The Delhi Taxi and Tourist Transporters Association has announced a march to Parliament on 4 August to press the same demands. The government maintains that the E20 programme is intended to cut crude‑oil imports, lower emissions, improve energy security and support farmers, and says there is no plan to increase ethanol blending beyond 20 %. It also notes that studies have found no widespread engine damage, although a recent survey showed 67 % of pre‑2023 car owners reporting a mileage drop of more than 10 % after E20’s introduction.
