India's fuel prices stay high despite global crude oil price drop

Global crude oil prices fell below $75 per barrel, the lowest level in four months, as reduced tensions between the United States and Iran and signs of a diplomatic agreement eased market concerns. Analysts attribute the roughly 3% decline to the improved geopolitical outlook and steady maritime traffic through the Hormuz Strait.

In India, the softening of international crude prices has not translated into lower retail fuel costs. As of 24 June 2026, petrol and diesel rates remained unchanged in major cities—Delhi (≈₹102.12/L petrol, ₹95.20/L diesel), Mumbai (₹111.21/L petrol, ₹97.83/L diesel), Kolkata, Chennai and Patna—due to state taxes, VAT and the need for oil firms to recoup earlier losses. Some states are still seeing pump prices above ₹117 per litre.

Industry officials say further declines in crude could eventually bring relief to Indian consumers and reduce inflationary pressure, but current price structures keep retail rates elevated.
