India's Record $863 Billion Export Surge Fueled by FTAs
India’s total exports reached a record US$863.1 billion in the 2025‑26 financial year, with merchandise exports of US$441.8 billion and services exports of US$421.3 billion. The surge is attributed to expanding market access under a network of Free Trade Agreements, notably with the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Australia, ASEAN and New Zealand, which together account for the bulk of the growth.
Certificates of Origin under the India‑UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement have topped 4.45 lakh since its launch, indicating deepening utilisation of trade pacts. Labour‑intensive sectors such as textiles, apparel, leather, gems and jewellery have benefited from preferential market access, while the defence sector recorded exports of Rs 38,424 crore in FY 26 and aims for Rs 50,000 crore by 2030.
The government also rolled out the “Districts as Export Hubs” programme, targeting 120 districts in 27 states to remove local barriers for small firms. New Zealand‑India FTA negotiations promise a US$2 billion opportunity for Indian textile and apparel exporters, and broader trade outreach is supported by initiatives like the India‑US trade facilitation portal and sector‑specific incentives.
