India's record exports and WTO review

Entities: Rajesh Kumar Singh · United Arab Emirates · Piyush Goyal · Jitin Prasada · ASEAN

Overview

In late July 2026, India’s Commerce Secretary presented the eighth WTO Trade Policy Review, highlighting a historic export total of $863.1 billion for FY 2025‑26, split into $441.8 billion of merchandise and $421.3 billion of services. The surge was attributed to deeper use of free‑trade agreements, especially with the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Australia and, as newly reported, the ASEAN‑India pact, which generated $38.42 billion of merchandise trade, and the UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, contributing $37.36 billion. A recently‑signed India‑New Zealand FTA opened a $2 billion textile market, while the India‑UK deal already delivered $13.44 billion in trade.

The review also noted rapid growth in textiles and apparel, strong smartphone demand, and a jump in defence exports to Rs 38,424 crore, with a target of Rs 50,000 crore by 2030. Government support schemes such as PM MITRA parks, Production‑Linked Incentives, and the RELIEF export‑facilitation initiative were cited as pillars of competitiveness. In parallel, foreign‑direct investment reached a record $94.84 billion in FY 26, underscoring the broader economic momentum.
