India's Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals Reach 142 Operational Sites and Attract Rs 10,000 crore Private Investment
Indian Railways has commissioned 142 Gati Shakti Multi‑Modal Cargo Terminals (GCTs) across the country, giving the network a freight handling capacity of 224 million tonnes per year. In the 2025‑26 financial year the terminals moved 146 million tonnes of cargo, covering commodities such as cement, steel, coal, foodgrains, fertilizers and automobiles. The programme has mobilised close to Rs 10,000 crore in private investment and created ancillary warehousing, cold‑storage and grain silos, boosting regional employment and competitiveness.
State‑wise, Odisha leads with 12 operational terminals and approvals for 36 more, followed by Rajasthan (10 operational, 15 approved) and Andhra Pradesh (5 operational, 14 approved). In‑principle approvals have also been granted for another 310 GCTs, expanding the initiative under the broader PM Gati Shakti plan to shift freight from road to rail and improve logistics efficiency.
