India PM Gati Shakti infrastructure development
Overview
India is expanding its PM Gati Shakti initiative to improve logistics efficiency and reduce domestic costs through integrated infrastructure planning.
Initial developments focused on the commissioning of 142 Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminals (GCTs), which achieved a freight handling capacity of 224 million tonnes per year. This expansion mobilized approximately Rs 10,000 crore in private investment and supported the movement of commodities such as steel, coal, and foodgrains. States including Odisha, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh have been primary contributors to the operational terminal count.
The initiative has since scaled to a broader evaluation of 396 infrastructure projects, with an estimated total cost of Rs 18.66 lakh crore. The Network Planning Group has sanctioned 256 of these projects, with 198 currently under implementation. These projects span multiple sectors, including highways, railways, power, ports, civil aviation, and telecommunications, utilizing a “Whole of Government” approach to integrate planning across various ministries and territories.
