India's Global Influence Expands via Defence Production and Diplomatic Outreach

India is increasingly seen as a leading voice for developing nations, actively participating in the G20, BRICS and Global South platforms. Its diplomatic outreach now spans Western powers, Gulf states, Africa and Southeast Asia, strengthening its strategic relevance.

Defence production reached a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore (about US$20.7 billion) in the 2025‑26 fiscal year, a 15.6 % rise and more than double the 2020‑21 level. Defence exports also hit a record Rs 38,424 crore (≈ US$4.5 billion). The growth is linked to the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self‑reliant India) initiative, highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioning three indigenous naval platforms in June 2026, underscoring India’s emerging capacity as a security actor in the Indian Ocean.

The report notes India’s development partnership with the Maldives, providing healthcare, education, infrastructure, emergency assistance and capacity‑building programmes, reinforcing its role in regional stability.
