India's HAL moves ahead with AMCA engine talks amid Tejas fighter delays

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has concluded technical negotiations with GE Aerospace for the GE‑414 turbofan engine variant INS6, intended for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) prototypes. Commercial discussions are now under way as the Defence Ministry issues Requests for Proposal to three private‑sector consortia. The AMCA is planned as a stealth‑enabled fifth‑generation fighter, with the first prototype flight targeted for 2032 and an initial order for up to 120 jets.

HAL is also facing criticism over delays in delivering the Tejas Mk1A fighter to the Indian Air Force. Of the 180 aircraft ordered – 83 under a 2021 contract and 97 under a 2025 contract – delivery is more than two years behind schedule due to challenges integrating advanced radar, electronic‑warfare and mission‑computer systems. The delays risk operational readiness as regional rivals modernise their fleets. Officials argue that beyond penalties, the programme needs institutional and technological support to accelerate deliveries.
