India's hill towns hit by severe traffic jams amid summer tourist surge

In Srinagar, Kashmir, the popular Boulevard Road running alongside Dal Lake has become increasingly clogged as the summer tourist season brings a surge of visitors. Commuters report hour‑long delays, especially on weekends, and cite inadequate parking regulation and the stalled four‑lane expansion project as key contributors. Local officials have deployed traffic police at critical points, but residents say the measures are insufficient for the growing vehicle volume.

Similarly, the Dehradun‑Mussoorie corridor in Uttarakhand is experiencing heavy congestion due to tourists traveling from Delhi and the ongoing Char Dham Yatra. Police have implemented a special traffic‑management plan, dividing the city into super zones, zones and sectors, and deploying officers, drones and CCTV to monitor flow and enforce parking at designated areas. Both regions face mounting pressure on existing road infrastructure as tourist numbers rise.
