INDIA bloc to meet Sept 30 over Election Commission controversies

The INDIA bloc is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi on September 30. The opposition coalition aims to coordinate a response to ongoing controversies involving the Election Commission of India.

Key agenda items for the meeting include the functioning of the Election Commission, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and concerns regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and VVPATs. The opposition is also considering a formal move to seek the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, which may involve collecting signatures from opposition Members of Parliament.

In preparation for these discussions, CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby met with Arvind Kejriwal to discuss the Election Commission row and Enforcement Directorate actions. The opposition has expressed concerns that the current situation threatens the credibility of Indian democracy and constitutional values.
