India's ISRO Begins Design of Bharatiya Antariksh Station Subsystems
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has started designing key subsystems for the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), India's first indigenous space station. Union Minister of State for Space Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that the baseline design review and system engineering for the first module, BAS‑01, are complete, with 31 baseline design documents released and approved by an expert committee.
BAS is planned as a five‑module orbital laboratory, with the maiden module slated for launch in 2028 and the full station targeted for completion by 2035. Technologies developed under the Gaganyaan human‑spaceflight programme—including the Human‑Rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3), orbital module, crew escape system, ground infrastructure, communication networks, and crew recovery systems—will be leveraged. ISRO has also demonstrated docking interfaces and an in‑space refuelling concept, and it has successfully completed three precursor missions: Test Vehicle Demonstration‑1 (TV‑D1) and Integrated Air‑Drop Tests IADT‑01 and IADT‑02. Preparations for the uncrewed G1 mission are now in an advanced stage.
