Overview

India is advancing its space exploration capabilities through several major programmes managed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). A central component is the development of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), a planned five-module orbital laboratory. The design phase for the first module, BAS-01, has commenced with the approval of 31 baseline design documents, with a launch targeted for 2028 and full station completion aimed for 2035.

During the third National Space Day celebrations in Ahmedabad, ISRO Chairman V Narayanan reaffirmed the goal to establish the station by 2035, noting that initial installations for the first approved module are expected to begin as early as 2027. Narayanan highlighted that India’s space-based applications now serve citizens in more than 50 sectors, including telecommunications, disaster warning, Earth observation, and navigation.

These efforts are supported by the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme. Recent developments include the establishment of the capsule communicator (CAPCOM) concept, which provides a single-voice liaison for direct radio communication with astronauts. To support these missions, ISRO is implementing structured protocol mission operations and collaborating with academic institutions for space medicine research to monitor astronaut health.

To scale operations, ISRO aims to increase its launch frequency to 50 missions annually by 2029 through the development of new launchpads, the Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), and increased private sector participation. This includes transitioning repeatable activities to industry, such as the first fully industry-built PSLV. Additional long-term objectives include a Venus Orbiter Mission scheduled for March 2028 and the development of orbital docking technologies via SPADEX missions.
