India's Jal Jeevan Mission expands rural tap water in Jammu, Andhra

The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti reported that 66.71% of rural households in Jammu district now have functional tap water connections, representing more than 1.26 lakh homes as of 15 July 2026. This marks an increase from 25.79% coverage at the scheme’s launch in August 2019, with 0.77 lakh new connections added under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The centre also noted related AMRUT 2.0 projects totalling Rs 137.88 crore across several districts in the Union Territory.

In Andhra Pradesh, 75.48% of the 95.53 lakh rural households are covered by tap water, equating to 72.11 lakh connections and leaving 23.42 lakh homes still unserved. Only three districts—Annamayya, Tirupati and Kadapa—have achieved full coverage, while several others, including Srikakulam and Palnadu, have large numbers of pending connections. The state aims for universal rural tap water coverage by June 2028, with phased implementation of village‑level schemes and bulk water supply works outlined by the Jal Shakti Ministry.
