Overview

The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti continues to report the expansion of rural tap-water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission. In Jammu district, coverage reached 66.71% by mid-July 2026, representing over 1.26 lakh homes—a significant increase from the 25.79% recorded at the scheme’s 2019 launch. In Andhra Pradesh, coverage stands at 75.48% of the 95.53 lakh rural households, with Annamayya, Tirupati, and Kadapa districts having achieved full coverage. The state aims for universal rural coverage by June 2028.

Progress is also notable in Zunheboto district, where 95.46% of rural households now have functional taps, up from 8.13% in 2019. In Bidar district, 644 villages have been declared to have tap water for every household; officials have been instructed to verify these supplies to help mitigate distress migration linked to drought-like conditions.

In Odisha, rural tap water coverage has reached 77% as of August 2026, with 68.73 lakh households connected, compared to just 3.1 lakh at the mission’s inception. This expansion of rural infrastructure coincides with broader development efforts, including housing initiatives under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and the Viksit Bharat–Gram programme, which aims to create community assets and generate employment at the village level.
