India secures 17 medals at U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship

The Indian U-23 fencing contingent has achieved a historic performance at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria, securing a total of 17 medals. The haul includes 4 gold, 4 silver, and 9 bronze medals across the Men’s and Women’s individual events in Sabre, Foil, and Epee.

In the men's categories, Nikhil Wagh won gold in Sabre, part of a complete Indian podium sweep. Other notable performances include silver medals for Tejas Patil in Foil and Lokesh Vemani in Epee. The women's team also saw success, with Joys Ashita winning gold in Foil, Prachi Lohan in Epee, and Jeferlin in Sabre.

Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Association of India, commended the athletes for their dedication, noting that these achievements are vital steps toward preparing young fencers for the senior international circuit. As the competition continues, India remains a dominant force on the medals table.

Separately, updates regarding the 2026 FIH Hockey Men’s and Women’s World Cup indicate a new competition format. Hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, the tournament will feature 16 teams and will eliminate the quarter-final stage, allowing top teams from crossover pools to advance directly to the semi-finals. In the Pakistan men's hockey team, Bob Johan Veldhof has been elevated to head coach following the departure of Herman Kruis.
