India's Ministry of Civil Aviation expands UDAN scheme

India's Ministry of Civil Aviation has entered the next phase of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional connectivity scheme, signing MoUs with 21 to 22 states and Union Territories.

Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu announced that the scheme has been extended for 10 years. Under this extension, the government aims to construct 100 new airports and 200 modern helipads. The upcoming phase targets facilitating travel for 40 million passengers.

A new Challenge Mode has been launched to fast-track airport projects, aiming to reduce construction timelines to 18 months from the previous average of two to three years. Additionally, Viability Gap Funding (VGF) support will be extended from three years to five years to support regional routes.

The minister noted that the aviation sector currently supports 7 million jobs and is projected to exceed 20 million jobs by 2040. The government also expressed a desire to encourage the growth of smaller airlines through state engagement.
