India UDAN regional connectivity scheme expansion
Overview
India's Ministry of Civil Aviation has initiated an extension of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional connectivity scheme for a ten-year period. The expansion plan includes the construction of 100 new airports and 200 modern helipads, with a new ‘Challenge Mode’ designed to reduce airport construction timelines to 18 months.
Following the tenth anniversary of the scheme's launch, the government is preparing a modified phase with a planned outlay of ₹28,840 crore. This next stage aims to add 120 new destinations and accommodate an additional 4 crore passengers. Financial support includes ₹12,159 crore for airport development and ₹3,661 crore for helipads. To ensure the commercial viability of regional routes, Viability Gap Funding (VGF) support has been extended from three to five years, with a total of over ₹5,000 crore already disbursed. The expansion will prioritize remote, hilly, and aspirational districts, specifically within the North Eastern region.
