India Meteorological Department issues heavy‑rain red alerts for 18 states
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an impact‑based warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds of up to 60 km/h across northern, eastern and central India. Red or orange alerts were announced for Delhi‑NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and 14 other states, with the risk of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and lightning strikes in vulnerable areas.
The forecasts cover the period from July 12 to July 19, 2026, with especially intense rainfall expected in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the northeastern states. IMD advised residents, pilgrims and tourists to avoid non‑essential travel, stay indoors during severe weather, and follow local authorities’ safety instructions.
