India’s Monsoon Deficit Delays Kharif Sowing as Heavy Rains Hit Jharkhand

The India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Jharkhand, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40‑50 km/h across all 24 districts from July 7 to July 10. Eight northeastern districts – Giridih, Dhanbad, Jamtara, Deoghar, Dumka, Pakur, Godda and Sahibganj – are expected to receive the heaviest rainfall, with isolated areas already recording up to 79.8 mm in a 24‑hour period.

A separate agricultural report notes that monsoon rains remain deficient over 52 % of India, with all‑India cumulative seasonal rainfall 38 % below normal and central India facing a 45 % shortfall. Kharif sowing stands at 350.9 lakh hectares, lagging 92 lakh hectares behind last year. Rice acreage is 6.3 lakh hectares below the five‑year average, while oilseeds and cotton are also below normal. Pulses and coarse cereals are expanding. Reservoirs are at 26 % of capacity nationally, dropping to 19.4 % in the east, heightening water stress for the upcoming cropping season.
