India's monsoon rains cause 20 deaths, prompt 500 crore flood relief funding

Heavy monsoon rains in western and northern India have resulted in at least 20 fatalities. In Surat, Gujarat, torrential downpours over two days led to 17 deaths, the rescue of more than 3,600 people and the relocation of over 4,300 residents from low‑lying areas. The state government announced a 500 crore rupee allocation for permanent flood‑control measures in the region.

In Uttar Pradesh, severe rainfall caused three separate deaths: two teenage boys were swept away by the swift current of the Malan River in Bijnor district, while a road collapse in Mirzapur injured a three‑person family riding a mop‑bike.

Authorities in both states are conducting rescue and recovery operations and assessing further safety measures.
