India's Monsoon Surpasses Forecast as US Rainfall Study Shows Climate‑Driven Shifts

India recorded above‑normal monsoon rainfall between July 1 and July 26, with total precipitation reaching 238.2 mm, slightly higher than the long‑period average of 233.9 mm. The outcome defied the India Meteorological Department’s earlier forecast of below‑normal rains. Experts linked the excess to rising land and ocean surface temperatures, which enhanced moisture absorption and intensified weather systems. Former IMD director‑general Dr. K. J. Ramesh noted that unusual warming in the western Pacific offset El Niño’s suppressing influence, allowing cyclonic circulations near Myanmar to re‑energize over the Bay of Bengal and draw additional moisture from the Arabian Sea.

A separate study of the United States found that in the Southwest and southern Plains raindrops now travel 30–50 miles farther before reaching the ground, and moisture remains aloft two to four hours longer than three decades ago. The research, led by University of Wyoming scientist Travis Aerenson, showed a shift in evaporation sources from land to ocean, altering regional rainfall patterns and raising concerns for water security, agriculture and land‑use planning. Both findings illustrate how a warming atmosphere is reshaping precipitation dynamics across continents.
