Overview
In early July, monsoon rains began easing a severe heat spell across several Indian states, providing much‑needed relief. By the end of the month, official measurements showed the Indian monsoon delivering above‑normal rainfall—238.2 mm versus the long‑term average of 233.9 mm—and surpassing the India Meteorological Department’s forecast of below‑normal rains. Experts linked the excess to rising land and ocean surface temperatures that increased atmospheric moisture and revitalised cyclonic circulations, offsetting the suppressive influence of El Niño.
A contemporaneous U.S. study found that raindrops in the Southwest and southern Plains now travel 30–50 miles farther before reaching the ground and remain aloft two to four hours longer than three decades ago. The research attributes this to a shift in evaporation sources from land to ocean, indicating broader climate‑driven changes in precipitation dynamics across continents.
