Assam Floods Hit 37,000 People, Death Toll Reaches Four

Heavy monsoon rains have caused severe flooding across Assam’s six districts—Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Sivasagar—affecting 37,032 people. The death toll rose to four, including a body recovered in Sonitpur’s Chariduar circle. Floodwaters have submerged 1,103.94 hectares of cropland, damaged roads, partially destroyed 73 houses and impacted more than 16,000 livestock. The state opened 20 relief‑distribution centres that are assisting roughly 7,000 residents, and the State Disaster Response Force rescued 16 people by boat.

The Assam government announced a Rs 150 crore flood‑mitigation project for the Jorabat area as part of the Guwahati Ring Road, aiming to provide a permanent solution to recurring flash floods. A review meeting chaired by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai evaluated immediate and long‑term drainage improvements, desilting, and rapid response teams.

In neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, flash floods triggered by the swollen Kumey River affected over 97,000 people in 425 villages, claimed seven lives and destroyed bridges, a church and a school. Relief and restoration operations are underway.

Overall, the monsoon‑related floods have disrupted transport, agriculture and livelihoods across northeastern India, prompting coordinated emergency response and infrastructure‑strengthening measures.
