Operation Trident: Indian agencies dismantle international drug cartel

Indian security agencies, led by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in coordination with the Mizoram Police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), launched ‘Operation Trident’ to dismantle a transnational narcotics-financial syndicate. On October 23, 38 teams conducted simultaneous raids at 38 locations across Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur.

The operation targeted a network operating through the ‘Death Triangle Corridor’ involving the borders of India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Authorities reported the exposure of Rs 100 crore in hawala transactions and froze 1,424 bank accounts. Additionally, officials attached properties worth Rs 17.82 crore and seized 500 detonators and Rs 12 lakh in cash.

Eighteen individuals were arrested during the crackdown. Investigations revealed the cartel was allegedly led by Myanmar-based kingpin Thangcintuang (also known as Chintuang or Tluanga), who was previously arrested in May. The operation aligns with the Indian government’s strategic shift toward a network-centric approach and its goal to eradicate all drug networks by December 31, 2029.
