India's Parliament debates police action at Jantar Mantar protest

On July 20, a demonstration at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar was met with police force that included lathi‑charges, pellet‑gun rounds, tear‑gas and water‑cannon dispersal, resulting in injuries to participants, including women and students.

Congress MP Manikam Tagore moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha demanding that Home Minister Amit Shah appear before the house, that the incident be examined as a matter of "public importance", and that an independent judicial inquiry be ordered along with the withdrawal of FIRs against the protesters. The opposition continued to raise the issue in both houses, with heated exchanges between opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiran Rijiju, while the speaker and the Rajya Sabha chairman attempted to restore order.

The demand for a transparent investigation and accountability for the police response remains unresolved as parliamentary proceedings continue.
