India's parliamentary panel urges review of CUET entrance exam

A parliamentary standing committee on education, women, children, youth and sports has raised concerns about the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). The panel said the multiple‑choice format is poorly suited to humanities and social‑science subjects and called for a review of the exam’s design and question quality to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The committee acknowledged that CUET reduces admission burdens and provides a single application window for central universities, but noted that the sole‑exam model limits institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru University from meeting specific legislative mandates. It recommended that the University Grants Commission and National Testing Agency revise the question paper quality and overall structure. The government recorded the observations and stated that CUET, now the second‑largest examination in India with about 1.35 million applicants in 2025, has been rationalised after its first three editions and offered in 37 subjects.
