India Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets Australian Opposition Leader Angus Taylor to deepen ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on a three‑day visit to Australia (July 8‑10), met Opposition Leader Angus Taylor in Melbourne. The leaders discussed the expanding India‑Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and highlighted bipartisan support for further cooperation.

The meeting followed a summit with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in which 18 agreements were signed, including a Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation, a Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap, and the operationalisation of a civil nuclear deal enabling Australian uranium exports to India. Both sides also pledged to accelerate a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and a bilateral investment protection framework, and to cooperate on critical minerals, cyber and technology sectors. A sports‑cooperation roadmap was slated for unveiling at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and Modi addressed the Indian diaspora at a "Melbourne meets Modi" event.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the meeting as “productive” and a sign of “strong bipartisan support” in Australia, while Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the defence initiatives reflect the partnership’s need to adapt to changing strategic circumstances.
