India and Seychelles deepen strategic partnership during Modi's state visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent three days (June 27‑29) in Seychelles, where India and the island nation signed 19 agreements covering defence, maritime security, digital payments, space, health, agriculture, education and climate cooperation. Key outcomes included a $175 million special economic package, an umbrella line of credit of ₹1,250 crore, the introduction of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Seychelles, an extradition treaty, and memoranda on cyber‑security, artificial‑intelligence, green mobility, social housing and blue‑economy projects. India also handed over a fast patrol vessel, ambulances, utility vehicles and laser‑radial boats to strengthen Seychelles’ maritime surveillance and emergency services.

During the visit Modi was conferred Seychelles’ newly created “Guardian of the Blue Horizon” award, addressed the National Assembly, and highlighted shared responsibilities for Indian Ocean security, climate action and sustainable development. The visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence and the 50th year of diplomatic ties between the two countries, underscoring a shift from friendship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
