India's PM Narendra Modi commissions three indigenous naval vessels in Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three indigenously designed and built naval platforms at the Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata on June 21. The vessels – stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, survey ship INS Sanshodhak and anti‑submarine warfare shallow‑water craft INS Agray – were constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers with participation from more than 200 micro, small and medium enterprises, achieving over 75 % indigenous content.

Modi highlighted the importance of maritime power for global security and economic prosperity and underscored India’s drive for defence self‑reliance under the Make in India initiative. He noted that more than 40 naval ships have been produced in recent years with 45 platforms under construction, reinforcing the country's push to become a manufacturer rather than a buyer in the defence sector. The newly commissioned ships enhance surface warfare, anti‑submarine capabilities and maritime domain awareness, supporting India’s strategic objectives in the Indian Ocean region.
