India's PM Surya Ghar Scheme Reaches 5 Million Households

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, India's flagship rooftop solar programme, has surpassed five million (50 lakh) households in just over two years. The initiative, launched in February 2024 with a budget of ₹750.21 billion, aims to create a nationwide rooftop solar ecosystem and support domestic renewable‑energy manufacturing.

Installation speed has accelerated sharply, climbing from about 5,000 installations per day in October 2025 to more than 16,000 per day in July 2026 – the highest daily rate recorded. In July alone, 506,000 households were connected, the scheme’s largest monthly intake. The government has disbursed ₹280.24 billion in subsidies directly to beneficiaries, and concessional loans at 5.75 % have been approved for over two million applicants. Around 1.9 million households now receive zero electricity bills, while more than 1.2 million households earned a combined ₹4.21 billion from selling surplus power in FY 2024‑25, roughly ₹3,500 per household per year.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi highlighted that the programme also powers over 25,000 central‑government and 81,000 state‑government buildings, contributing to India's target of 300 GW of non‑fossil‑fuel capacity and 500 GW by 2030.
