India and Indonesia sign BrahMos and Astra missile deals during Modi's Jakarta visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Jakarta on July 6‑8, 2026, concluding the first leg of his three‑nation tour. The visit resulted in the signing of 14‑20 comprehensive agreements that deepen the India‑Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Key among the accords is Indonesia’s purchase of India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra beyond‑visual‑range air‑to‑air missiles, with the BrahMos contract valued at about $630 million. The deals also cover joint defence research, co‑production, maritime domain awareness, disaster management, and the development of the Sabang port in Aceh as a strategic link to India’s Great Nicobar port.

Beyond defence, the partners agreed on cooperation in critical minerals, steel supply chains, digital commerce (the ION network built on India’s ONDC platform), electronic voting machines, space, health, agriculture and the restoration of the UNESCO‑listed Prambanan temple complex. The agreements signal a coordinated effort to widen economic ties and present a strategic counter‑balance to China’s influence in the Indo‑Pacific region.
