Modi’s Seychelles visit boosts maritime security and unveils MAHASAGAR vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a three‑day state visit to Seychelles (June 27‑29, 2026) coinciding with the island nation’s Golden Jubilee of independence. He met President Patrick Herminie, attended the national day celebrations, and became the first Indian prime minister to address the Seychelles National Assembly, stressing the Indian Ocean as a shared home and recalling historic cultural links.

During the visit India and Seychelles signed 19 bilateral agreements covering digital payments (UPI), health, education, defence, space, maritime security, AI, cyber‑security, marine science, blue‑economy and other sectors. A key gesture was the hand‑over of a Made‑in‑India Fast Patrol Vessel (PS LESPWAR) built by Goa Shipyard, together with six ambulances, ten utility vehicles and five laser‑radial boats to strengthen Seychelles’ Exclusive Economic Zone patrols.

Seychelles conferred on Modi its highest environmental honour, the “Guardian of the Blue Horizon”, recognizing his work on climate action and sustainable development. The prime minister dedicated the award to nations fighting climate change and outlined India’s MAHASAGAR initiative – an “Ocean of Opportunity” vision that links security, prosperity and cooperation across the Indian Ocean region.
