India's Private Space Startups Secure $871 Million Funding, Grow to Over 450 Firms

India’s private space sector has expanded dramatically, reaching more than 450 startups by 2026 after the government opened the market to private firms in 2020 and introduced the Indian Space Policy in 2023, which created the single‑window agency IN‑SPACe. The reforms have attracted cumulative private investment exceeding $500 million.

External venture capital has now totalled $871 million across 285 companies and 241 funding rounds. Skyroot Aerospace leads with $150 million raised, a $1.1 billion valuation and the launch of Vikram‑1, the first privately developed Indian rocket to reach orbit, making it the country’s first spacetech unicorn. Other heavily funded startups include Pixxel, Agnikul Cosmos and Digantara, with Bengaluru accounting for $495 million of the total. The Indian space economy, valued at $8‑9 billion, aims to grow to $44 billion by 2033, driven by satellite launches, data services and component manufacturing.
