India's first private orbital rocket launch

Overview

On 18 July 2026 Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram‑1 lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre after a brief 35‑minute delay caused by a computer‑system glitch. The 22‑metre, three‑stage vehicle placed six payloads into a roughly 450 km low‑Earth orbit, fulfilling “Mission Aagaman”. Payloads included two CubeSats, a robotic‑arm debris‑removal tool, a lab‑grown diamond, an 18‑carat gold miniature of Indian scientific pioneers, and a handwritten postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Modi hailed the flight as a historic milestone, noting that it makes India the third country, after the United States and China, to achieve orbital launch capability through a private company. Indian leaders across the government praised the achievement as a sign of a rapidly growing commercial space ecosystem.

Skyroot, now valued at about $1 billion, plans additional test flights before offering regular small‑satellite launch services. ISRO reiterated its commitment to multiple private launches this fiscal year and is constructing a second launch complex at Kulasekarapattinam to support the expanding private sector.
