India's private space sector targets major commercial launch expansion

India's private space sector is poised for significant expansion, with more than eight commercial rocket launches projected across FY 2026-27 and FY 2027-28. This growth follows the successful orbital launch of the Vikram-1 rocket by Skyroot Aerospace, a milestone that industry leaders suggest will build global confidence in India as a comprehensive space technology destination.

The Indian government has reported 440 registered space technology startups, with 18 specifically authorized by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to conduct space activities. IN-SPACe has issued 113 authorizations to 52 non-government entities covering satellites, launch vehicles, and infrastructure, facilitating access to ISRO facilities like the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

Private firms are increasingly focusing on specialized missions, including agriculture, hyper-spectral imaging, and low-cost satellite launches. There is also a growing emphasis on sustainability, with companies working on reusable rocket technology and carbon-neutral materials to mitigate space debris and environmental impacts.
