India’s renewable energy capacity jumps 25% to 288 GW in first half of 2026

India added 30.6 GW of new renewable energy capacity in the first half of 2026, driving a 25 % year‑on‑year increase. The total installed renewable capacity reached 288 GW, representing 52 % of the country’s overall power generation mix. Solar power led the expansion with 162 GW installed, a 43 % annual rise, while wind capacity grew to 57 GW.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi highlighted the surge, noting that Gujarat and Rajasthan together account for roughly 45 % of the nation’s solar‑and‑wind installations, with Gujarat contributing over 22 % of the combined capacity. The International Energy Agency praised India’s rapid growth but warned that offshore wind projects continue to face delays and cancellations. The surge occurs as India confronts grid‑integration challenges from higher variable renewable penetration.
