India's renewable equipment sector hits bottlenecks, seeks policy boost

India’s rapid renewable‑energy expansion is outpacing the domestic supply of critical grid equipment. Transformer makers such as Atlanta Electricals, which operates five factories with a combined 63,060 MVA capacity, report shortages, long lead times and financing constraints that delay transmission projects. The company has repaid about ₹3.4 billion of debt and is funding growth internally, but still faces challenges from land acquisition, right‑of‑way issues, regulatory approvals and the need for more locally produced high‑voltage transformers.

At the same time, roughly 80 % of solar‑panel and battery‑storage components are imported, many from China, leaving India dependent on foreign technology even as it scales renewable capacity. Industry leaders argue that building domestic manufacturing for solar modules, battery cells and related equipment is essential for true energy independence, and they call for stronger policy support to localise critical transmission and storage hardware.
