India's Solar Drive Accelerates as Reliance Targets 20 GW Integrated Capacity
India now produces over 200 GW of solar modules each year but relies on imports for most of the upstream supply chain, with domestic cell capacity limited to 27 GW and nearly all wafers and polysilicon coming from abroad. At Reliance Industries’ AGM, director Anant Ambani announced a plan to expand the company’s battery‑energy‑storage system and cell‑manufacturing to 120 GWh annually and to build a fully integrated solar production line capable of 20 GW per year, covering polysilicon, ingots, wafers, cells, modules and glass.
The push comes as the country crossed 150 GW of installed solar capacity in March 2026, adding a record 44.6 GW in the fiscal year and driving solar to 55 % of India’s 275 GW renewable portfolio. Non‑fossil generation now exceeds 50 % of total power. Government targets aim for 500 GW of non‑fossil capacity by 2030, including 280‑300 GW of solar, and 1,800 GW of renewable energy by 2047. Challenges remain, notably the gap between cell and module capacity and delays in transmission infrastructure.
