India's Solar Manufacturing Capacity Projected to Reach 250 GW by 2030
India’s solar module manufacturing capacity is forecast to climb to about 250 GW by fiscal year 2030, according to a CareEdge Analytics report. The sector has grown from 13.6 GW in FY20 to 172 GW in FY26, while cell production remains low at 27 GW, leaving the country still reliant on imported wafers and polysilicon. Major firms such as Adani Solar, Waaree Energies, Tata Power Solar and Premier Energies are investing in ingot and wafer facilities, aiming for 5‑7 GW of wafer‑ingot capacity by FY27 and up to 24‑33 GW by FY30. Backward‑integration policies—including the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers, Production‑Linked Incentive scheme, and customs duty reductions—are intended to cut import dependence, especially from China, and to boost exports, which could exceed 30 GW by 2030.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju highlighted that India’s total installed solar capacity has risen from 2.8 GW in 2014 to 155 GW in 2026, a 55‑fold increase, and that more than 4 million homes now receive solar power. The rapid expansion is presented as a cornerstone of the nation’s clean‑energy and energy‑security agenda under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
