India's Solar Manufacturing Drive Calls for Quality Standards and Industry Consolidation

India has rapidly expanded its domestic solar module manufacturing capacity, now reaching 170‑180 GW, while cell, ingot and wafer production is also accelerating. Industry leaders say that achieving a fully self‑reliant supply chain will require domestic production of ancillary components such as junction boxes, interconnect busbars, encapsulants, sealants, solar glass, aluminum frames and DC cables, along with robust quality testing and policy support.

Bhupendra Singh Rawat, CEO of Dhash Green Energy, highlighted the company's 63 GW junction‑box and 25 GW interconnect‑busbar capacities and stressed that reliable, long‑life components are essential for the 30‑year warranties of solar projects, framing energy security as a national priority.

Devesh Sharma, CEO of INOX Solar, warned that module capacity far exceeds near‑term demand of about 50 GW, creating overcapacity and pricing pressure. He noted that cell capacity now stands at roughly 32 GW and that upcoming domestic content requirements will boost demand for Indian‑made cells. INOX plans to pursue vertical integration, hybrid renewable projects and tighter quality control, anticipating consolidation in the sector.
